Philip Giraldi speaking at the National Press Club, in Washington, DC, on January 30, 2013, focuses on Christian Zionism's end-time theology interworking with Israeli politics and their influence in American domestic and International politics. A subject he observes not much discussed in Washington, that needs to be talked about more.
Philip Giraldi is director at the Council for the National Interest. He is a recognized authority on international security and counterterrorism issues. He is a former CIA counter-terrorism specialist and military intelligence officer who served eighteen years overseas in Turkey, Italy, Germany, and Spain. He was Chief of Base in Barcelona from 1989 to 1992 designated as the Agency’s senior officer for Olympic Games support.
He emphasized the political significance of Christian Zionists in the United States, their involvement in and growing influence over American domestic politics and some aspects of American foreign policy, through major movements such as CUFI, two million strong (Christians United For Israel) members, headed by pastor John Hagee, a potent political force.
He explains how their mechanism actually works by pointing to an example as recent as last Monday, when 200 CUFI (Christians United for Israel) leaders were flown to Washington, all expenses paid, to lobby their senators against the confirmation of Chuck Hagel as US Secretary of Defense ( @4 from each State so they could lobby every senator). He added, Hagel has been criticized by the evangelicals as being less than completely supportive of Israel and hesitant to go to war against Iran for Israel.
The bottom line, Giraldi stresses: Christian Zionism's involvement in American politics on behalf of the U.S. relations with Israel, does not serve any conceivable national interests, unless one assumes Israel and the U.S. are essentially the same, which is unsustainable. On the contrary, he observes, it serves a particularly narrowly construed parochial interest, that ironically is intended to bring about the end of the world, possibly a victory for pastor John Hagee, if his interpretation of the bible is correct, but quite likely a disaster for the rest of us.
